The five-year project entitled “Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalization” (MOTRA) is a research consortium funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the context of civil security research. In addition to intensifying investigative activities within the BKA, research and prevention in the field of Islamist extremism and terrorism will now be further strengthened. In recent years, the combination of theory and practice, achieved by a regular exchange of current scientific information and practical experience, has become a significant element in the performance of the BKA's manifold tasks. With a view to advancing this process, Prof. Dr. Martin PRZYBILSKI, Vice-President of the University of Trier, Mr. Thomas BÖNDERS, President of the Federal University of Public Administration, and Mr. Holger MÜNCH, President of the BKA, signed a cooperation agreement. A regular exchange of lecturers, mutual guest lectures and courses/seminars as well as joint follow-up research and teaching projects are the cornerstones of this agreement.
It was already in the aftermath of the attack on the Boston Marathon in April 2013, that the German police recognised the need for accepting online leads in the form of private image and video materials. Following the incidents on the night of New Year's Eve in Cologne, the information portal was first used in January 2016 to record leads. Since then, the information portal has been made available for specific periods of time, as occasion demands.

The BKA's Social Media Team starts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Moreover, the BKA website is substantially revised and offers a responsive design for mobile handsets (as of 1 August 2016). Interested users now have access to a comprehensive and up-to-date range of information, which gives an insight into issues of security, crime control and the work of the BKA and offers possibilities for interactive participation and communication through Social Media. Within the framework of the BKA Autumn Conference 2014, an official ceremony was held on 19 November 2014 in which the Federal Minister of the Interior, Mr. Thomas DE MAIZIÈRE, bid farewell to the retiring BKA President, Mr. Jörg ZIERCKE, after nearly 11 years at the top of the agency. Subsequently, the future BKA President, Mr. Holger MÜNCH, was inaugurated in office.

The BKA takes on a new operational function assigned to it by law: the creation and start-up of a new German passenger information unit ("PIU"). In future, the details of all passengers arriving at or departing from all German airports on commercial flights (including intra-Schengen flights, excluding domestic flights) will be processed pursuant to the Passenger Name Record Act for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences and serious crime.
